Tree Of Sores - Tree Of Sores (2011)

EP, Witch Hunter Records
February 21st, 2011

Genre: Atmospheric Sludge/Post-Metal
Region: UK

Some heavy shit right here. From Witch Hunter Records:

"Leeds 3 piece, taking influences from the doomy atmospherics of Neurosis, an underbelly of crust care of Amebix, and an air of recklessness favoured by the likes of Eyehategod. The band create a vibe that is heavy, dark and ambient, with tortured male/female vocals, and a mission to take you to a frightening place. "

Definitely has a sound comparable to Amenra and Neurosis at times but with a much more crusty edge. Listen here.

Begrime Exemious - Impending Funeral of Man (2010)

Full Length, Dark Descent Records
April 15th, 2010

Genre: Death Metal
Region: Canada

Dark Descent Records certainly have an impressive stable.

I'm a little late on this one but with their new album "Visions of the Scourge" is on the horizon now is a great time to get this up anyway. Begrime Exemious are from Alberta and like Mitochondrion, Adversarial, Antediluvian and Weapon are at the forefront of the massive and crushing wave of dark, twisted and well written Canadian death and black metal that is turning heads in the community. If you enjoy those aforementioned groups and haven't heard this get on it!

Ruin Lust - Tour Demo CDr (2011)

Demo, Unsigned
2011

Genre: Black/Death Metal
Region: USA

A project with members of Fell Voices I've been hearing about for the past few months. They toured with Ash Borer this year and released 50 copies of this demo during that time.

This is dark and quite different from Fell Voices, taking a more traditional death metal route with deep beastial growls and yells, dirty riffs, and furious drumming. It's a short taste of what to expect later and boy is it promising. You'll soon be able to snag a copy at Fallen Empire.

Ringo Deathstarr - Colour Trip (2011)

Full Length, Club AC30
February 14th, 2011

Genre: Shoegaze/Dream Pop
Region: USA

Some are calling it a Lovless ripoff, others are enjoying it to the fullest. There's no denying where the influence comes from (My Bloody Valentine/The Jesus and Mary Chain) but if you enjoy some fuzzy, warm, noisy dream pop in that vein I see no reason why you shouldn't give this a listen.

Barghest - Barghest (2011)

Full Length, Big Mountain
March 3rd, 2011

Genre: Black Metal
Region: USA

Several members of Thou making raw black metal. To me it sounds like a mix of Krallice's first album (especially some riffs in the first half, though shorter) with some "As Jerusalem Burns..." era Melechesh. At points it moves into death metal territory.

Glasses - The Ills of Life (2010)

Full Length, Vendetta Records
November, 2010

Genre: Hardcore
Region: Germany

Coming from Vendetta Records (Men in Search of the Perfect Weapon, Perth Express, Alipinist, and Black Freighter) — Glasses are a great female fronted German hardcore act. This is their second release and a damn good one. Short and sweet.

Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine - Rampton (2002)

Full Length, Southern Lord
April 2nd, 2002

Genre: Drone/Doom Metal
Region: UK

Containing members of Sunn O))), Electric Wizard, Khanate, Burning Witch, and Napalm Death — Rampton is enormous, crawling, dirty and trance inducing. This is a crushing record in all aspects. Fans of Oak, Monarch!, Khanate, Trees, Buried At Sea, Black Shape Of Nexus, Asunder, Moss, etc. should get on this now if you haven't already. It's a shame they're on hold.

Dephosphorus - Axiom (2011)

EP, Independent
June 28th, 2011

Genre: Grindcore/Death Metal/Hardcore
Region: Greece

The guys over at The Living Doorway brought this release to my attention. Dephosphorus are getting glowing reviews all over the place and for good reason. Dubbed "astro grind", they released this album for free not long ago and promise new stuff very soon as well.

Axiom is an excellent blend of blackened hardcore riffs that melt into death/black metal stylings; like a mash up of Black Arrows of Filth and Impurity with Young and In The Way, but much more than that is to be heard here . It works really well and you can't really pin them down to one genre for very long. A fantastic album indeed that demands to be listened to on repeat — check them out on bandcamp too.

Baptists - Baptists (2011)

EP, Southern Lord
February 2nd, 2011

Genre: Hardcore
Region: Canada

A young west coast Canadian hardcore act, and quite solid too. Four ripping tracks of raw hardcoreI recommend checking out.

Definitely give this a shot if you like Converge, Cursed, Black Breath, and all that good stuff. You can pick it up over at Southern Lord's webstore or give a listen here.

Shoegaze infused with Noise Rock. Really great album, reminiscent of Veil Veil Vanish at times but with a mix of punk to its sound that really lends itself well to the shoegaze elements.
